Best wishes to our Summer Quarter 2020 graduates!

Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation (IMSI) will be hosting an online conference on October 7-9 to introduce the areas it will be focusing on.  Registration is required, but free. 

Rina Foygel Barber was awarded the 2020 COPSS Presidents' Award, on August 5, during a JSM (virtual) ceremony. This is generally considered the highest award in statistics.  Read more...

The GROW 2020 conference is aimed at female-identified undergraduate students who may be interested in pursuing a graduate degree in the mathematical sciences. The conference is open to undergraduates from U.S. colleges and universities, including international students.  Visit: https://mathematics.uchicago.edu/grow2020/ for detailed  information and updates.

Applications for GROW 2020 can be submitted at https://www.mathprograms.org/db/programs/966.  The committee is currently screening applications; those submitted by September 1, 2020 will be given full consideration.

This event is being supported by the University of Chicago Department of Mathematics and the National Science Foundation.

Our Consulting Award winner for 2019-2020 is Dongyue Xie. 

PhD candidate, Abby Stevens, awarded the David Wallace Award for Applied Statistics.

Statistics PhD student Sen Na has been awarded the prestigious Harper
Dissertation Fellowship for 2020-21.  The University-wide competition awards
financial support toward the completion of the candidate's dissertation.
 

The Peter Gavin Hall Early Career Prize recognizes early-career research accomplishments and research promise in statistics, broadly construed. The inaugural recipient of the 2020 Peter Hall Prize is Rina Foygel Barber, Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Chicago.  Read more

Congratulations to Prof. Wei Biao Wu for being elected to receive a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Lek-Heng Lim, Associate Professor in Statistics and the Computational and Applied Mathematics Initiative, has been named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) for 2020 for his contributions to applied mathematics, particularly numerical linear algebra. 

Prof. Rebecca Willett has been leading a new initiative sponsored by the Office for National Laboratories at the University of Chicago to facilitate new collaborations at the intersection of artificial intelligence and basic sciences in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory and Fermilab.  Read more...
