David Wallace Award for Applied Statistics

Micol Tresoldi, PhD candidate

The Department's David Wallace Award for Applied Statistics is given yearly to graduate students working on applications of statistics in scientific domains. The award includes a supplement to the student’s summer support. This year, the award is given to Micol Tresoldi for her research on sparsity in ANOVA and F-ratios, and for her outstanding contributions to the consulting program over the years. 


Symposium highlights UChicago collaborations with leading French research center

An online symposium featured 11 presentations by student teams from UChicago and French universities affiliated with the French National Centre for Scientific Research, with questions and discussion from faculty supervisors. Attendees voted to choose the best presentations and awarded two prizes. PSD’s Yi Liu in statistics (pictured) and Maria Douaihy of CNRS – U. Montpellier won second place for “Modeling Transcriptional Bursting in Space and Time.” First place was awarded to Marie Greaney of BSD and Maxime Lehman of CNRS – U. Paris-Saclay for “How is Sensory Information Transformed into Appropriate Motor Control?”

The GROW 2020 conference is aimed at female-identified undergraduate students who may be interested in pursuing a graduate degree in the mathematical sciences. Applications for GROW 2020 can be submitted at https://www.mathprograms.org/db/programs/966.  The committee is currently screening applications; those submitted by September 1, 2020 will be given full consideration.
