Prof. Chao Gao awarded a Sloan Fellowship for 2022

Congratulations to The Fall 2021 Consulting Cup winner -- The Thursday Team! 

Jongyoon Baik, MS candidate in Statistics, and PhD candidate in Political Science at the University of Chicago, has been awarded a 2021-2022 Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant (DDRIG) by the American Political Science Association for her dissertation research. 

Professors Dan Nicolae and Peter McCullagh presented the Consulting Award certificates to Micól Tresoldi (winner for 2020-2021), and Dongyue Xie (winner for 2019-2020) at 4:15 pm in Jones 110.

The Department's David Wallace Award for Applied Statistics is given yearly to graduate students working on applications of statistics in scientific domains. The award includes a supplement to the student’s summer support. This year, the award is given to Micol Tresoldi for her research on sparsity in ANOVA and F-ratios, and for her outstanding contributions to the consulting program over the years. 

An online symposium featured 11 presentations by student teams from UChicago and French universities affiliated with the French National Centre for Scientific Research, with questions and discussion from faculty supervisors. Attendees voted to choose the best presentations and awarded two prizes. PSD’s Yi Liu in statistics (pictured) and Maria Douaihy of CNRS – U. Montpellier won second place for “Modeling Transcriptional Bursting in Space and Time.” First place was awarded to Marie Greaney of BSD and Maxime Lehman of CNRS – U. Paris-Saclay for “How is Sensory Information Transformed into Appropriate Motor Control?”

Statistics PhD Pinhan Chen has been awarded the prestigious Harper Dissertation Fellowship for 2021-22.

Rebecca Willett selected as a SIAM Fellow for 2021

Prof. Chao Gao has been selected to receive the 2021 Tweedie New Researcher Award from the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS).

PhD candidate, Yi Liu, has been awarded the prestigious SBSS Student Paper Award.

Rina Foygel Barber has been named the Louis Block Professor.

Professor Rebecca Willett of the Departments of Statistics and Computer Science, along with Professors Rina Foygel Barber and Mary Silber from Statistics, will help the four-university collaboration establish the maturing field of data science while also advancing machine learning and other artificial intelligence approaches.
