David Biron joined the Department in Autumn 2020 as Assistant Senior Instructional Professor. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the Weizmann Institute, and has extensive teaching experience at the University of Chicago with previous appointments in Physics, JFI and IBD. Dr. Biron developed a strong research program at the intersection of biology and physics, using the worm C. elegans to study fundamental functions of sleep and sleep deprivation, sleep homeostasis, and regulation of locomotion, feeding and quiescence.
Victor Veitch, Assistant Professor joins us on January 1, 2021 from Columbia University, where he was appointed as Postdoctoral Research Scientist. He received a Ph.D. in Statistics from University of Toronto in 2017 and an M.S. in Mathematics from University of Waterloo in 2013. Dr. Veitch’s research has focused on adapting machine learning for causal inference using observational data. He worked on many aspects of this problem, from optimization algorithms for relational data using stochastic gradient descent, to the use of deep learning for dimension reduction in natural language unstructured data.
