Background
Before joining UChicago, I spent three years as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Johns Hopkins University and, prior to that, two years as a postdoctoral scholar at Caltech. I received my Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Cornell University in 2021. I hold bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and in Systems and Computing Engineering, as well as a master’s degree in Mathematics, from Universidad de los Andes in Colombia.
Research
My research lies at the intersection of continuous optimization, geometry, and statistics. I spend most of my time developing and analyzing scalable algorithms for problems arising in data science, machine learning, and signal processing. In particular, I seek to understand which geometric properties enable simple iterative methods to succeed. Beyond establishing upper bounds, I am also interested in identifying the fundamental limits of algorithms, both computational and statistical.
